CHSS students take part in 2022 Mason Graduate Interdisciplinary Conference

The Mason Graduate Student Interdisciplinary Conference is hosted by the Offices of the Provost and Executive Vice President, University Life, Graduate Student Life, and the Graduate and Professional Student Association. It takes place on Friday, April 8, in Merten Hall on Mason's Fairfax Campus.

Among the research on display will be a number of presentations from CHSS students, reflecting a number of the college's disciplines.

In the session on Society and its Use of AI/Technology, Liam Kettle (psychology) will present “Warning: Pedestrian ahead”: The Impact of Monitoring Requests on Trust, Acceptance, Blame, and Praise of Autonomous Vehicles. Andreas Rosero and Faustina Dinh (both, psychology), will present “Two Many Cooks”: Understanding Dynamic Human - Agent Team Communication and Perception Using Overcooked 2.

In the session on Education and Wellbeing, Tahani Chaudhry (psychology) will present Religious Help-Seeking in Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence. Rafael Hoyos Justiniano (psychology) and Carla Garcia (global affairs) will present The Case for Latino/a Advocacy and Outreach: An Interdisciplinary Analysis of Strengths and Weaknesses in Institutional Practices at George Mason University. 

In the session on New Methods in Science, Gretchen Baas (criminology, law and society) will present Utilizing the Cardiff Model to Understand Characteristics of Individuals Reporting Violence.

In the session on COVID and Society, Severin Mueller (cultural studies), will present “We Need Our Kids Back in School”: The 2018 West Virginia Teachers Strike and the Crisis of Public Education in the Age of the Pandemic. 

In the session on Society in a Global Arena, Judith L. Mane (sociology) will present Development-induced displacement and resettlement: Encounter of realities, histories, and cultures. Aisha Yusuf (economics) will present Ethnic Identity and the Prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation in Africa. Max Rollins (sociology) will present A Concept of Inter-Societal Relations. 

In the session on Environment and Society, Blake Vullo (sociology) will present Learning from the Path: Examining Land-Use within Environmental and Development Sociology.

In the session entitled, A Look into Social Symbolism, David Heilbrun (English) will present Ursula K. Le Guin's Anarchist Anthropology. Alexander Taylor (economics) will present Public Symbols and Voting Behavior: Confederate Symbols in the Post-Reconstruction South. Munira Mutmainna (writing and rhetoric) will present Atelophobia, Perfectionism and the Fear of Failing in Disney’s Encanto
