Blackboard tip to help students affected by COVID

Associate psychology professor Justin Ramsdell suggests a Blackboard solution for situations when multiple students are not able to attend class because they tested positive for COVID:

In an effort to try and avoid hundreds of individual student meetings to get people caught up on the material they missed after testing positive for Covid, I went back in time in Blackboard and copied all the videos from a previous version of the course (that was totally online) into my course for this semester.

I then renamed the link “Covid” in the menu on the left-hand side of the screen. Once the videos are transferred over to this semester’s course, you can use “adaptive release” to choose which students you want to see the videos in that folder.

Follow these steps:

    1. On the folder with the videos, click the little arrow on the side of the title (the “chevron”)
    2. Choose “Adaptive Release: Advanced”
    3. Click “Create Rule” at the top of the screen
    4. Name the rule (whatever you want) and click “submit”
    5. Click “Create Criteria” at the top of the screen and choose “Membership”
    6. Add the usernames of the students who are out with Covid and keep clicking “OK” until you can’t anymore.

After that, only the students you selected will be able to view that material and they can watch whatever videos are in that folder instead of coming to class. No other students will be able to view that material.
