Clarification of the Mason Mask Policy from the Human Resources Department

This email from Human Resources was sent to all currently enrolled domestic students, faculty, staff, and contractors/affiliates regarding Mason's mask policy.

The fall semester is well underway and the Mason community has shown extraordinary commitment to health and safety again this fall. Our semester has been successful, as we’ve taken great care to adhere to Mason’s policies, which are derived from the guidance laid out from local and federal health officials. As we head toward the second half of our semester, it seems a good time to clarify and reinforce one of our most critical policies.

All individuals, including those fully vaccinated, must wear face covering inside University Facilities (i.e. indoor or enclosed spaces including buildings and vehicles).

The university’s policy on face coverings includes a detailed list of situations where one may remove their face coverings. In particular, the policy specifies that face coverings may be removed when an individual is “alone in a private, enclosed space (e.g., an individual’s office, private rehearsal space).” In this instance, a “private, enclosed space” refers to a space where a door can be shut and an individual can be alone. A “private, enclosed space” DOES NOT refer to cubicles. Face coverings must be worn when working in a cubicle, even if you are alone within the cubicle and even if there is no one occupying the cubicles and spaces around you. As always, face coverings should be worn over the nose and the mouth.

Please review the university’s policy on face coverings for detailed requirements. Supervisors and managers should monitor spaces and be prepared to share policy requirements to ensure employee compliance.

Our continued success is dependent on the community’s willingness to adhere to the university’s public health and safety precautions. Thank you for your continued commitment to maintaining your own health and that of your fellow Mason Patriots.
