This fall, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences added a few new adornments to one of its longest traditions, the annual Celebration of Scholarship.

During the event, Jack Censer, dean of the college, honored 27 students, both graduate and undergraduate, who won college scholarships and awards. The number of students recognized is the highest in the college’s history.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to recognize students who have excelled, not only in the classroom, but also as members of our community,” Censer said.

He also recognized the winners of the 16th annual Award for Scholarship: the Center of Excellence in Neuroergonomics, Technology, and Cognition (CENTEC) and Colin Dueck, associate professor in the Department of Public and International Affairs.

“The Award for Scholarship recognizes faculty members whose recent research plays an important role in advancing their disciplines and who are widely known as first-rate scholars,” Censer said.

The Celebration of Scholarship took place in the Mason Hall Atrium on Monday, November 12, delayed by the arrival of Hurricane Sandy. During this annual event, the college honors students who achieve high academic marks and devote sizable amounts of time to extraordinary extracurricular activities. In particular, the college honors the winners of the Dean’s Challenge Scholarship and Fellowship (awarded each fall) and the winners of the Freshman Academic Achievement Scholarship, the First-Sweitzer Scholarship, and the Robert R. Thomas, Jr. Scholarship (all three awarded the previous winter). The recipients of the student awards receive a stipend to help with their educational expenses.
