Dr. Tammy Kochel is an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She received her PhD in Justice, Law and Crime Policy at George Mason University in 2009, and her MA in Administration of Justice from Southern Illinois University. Dr. Kochel's primary research interests include policing, especially police legitimacy, evidence-based practice, and decision-making, as well as neighborhood ecology and collective efficacy. She has conducted a hot spots policing experiment with the St. Louis County Police, funded by the National Institute of Justice.
Previously, Dr. Kochel was involved in research with police in Trinidad and Tobago and with a variety of agencies across the U.S. She has worked for the Department of Justice and a for-profit consulting practice, and has been a correctional officer in a jail.
