Juan Biscay

Where are you from?

Buenos Aires, Argentina.

What was your undergraduate major, and from which university did you graduate?

Global Affairs, George Mason University

What are some causes/ issues you care about? Why?

I want to continue my education in the field of Global Affairs because I want to specialize in dealing with international conflicts. My goal is to work in the field of conflict resolution among nations. My experience completing my undergraduate studies at Mason has sparked my interest in achieving this goal.

What work/intern/volunteer experience do you have and how has it prepared you for your studies?

I had the opportunity to do an internship at the embassy of Uruguay in Washington D.C. The experience was fascinating because I had the chance to create and translate reports about the economic and social situation of Uruguay for the diplomats that were working in the embassy. I also had the chance to participate in projects and create cultural events for the embassy.

What aspects of Mason made you choose to study here?

I chose Mason because it is a school that is growing and getting more competitive every year. The professors that I had have great teaching styles. Mason has a great reputations and is affordable compared to other universities. Also, Mason has great facilities, places to study, food courts, etc.

What do you hope to accomplish while at Mason?

I am hoping to continue to grow as a person and in the career I choose. Since I have started at Mason, I had great experiences and met wonderful people. While completing my undergraduate studies I took a class in Government Issues with an ambassador of the UN. The class was co-facilitated by a UN representative. I learned that global conflicts are more complex than what they look and resolutions are not very easy because we deal with many people from different cultures and backgrounds.

What are your hobbies?

I love to spend time with my family and friends. I enjoy playing and watching soccer and listening to music. Traveling is also something that I love.

What are you most looking forward to while living in the DC area?

Being with my family and friends while we discover new places in the area.

What is your favorite thing about being a student?

I am constantly learning and gathering experiences that I won’t get in any other place. Moreover, meeting people during the career, it is another great accomplish as a student.

Which languages do you speak?

I speak Spanish and English.

What was the last book you read? Do you recommend it? (Why/why not)

El Cartel de Bagram, by Gustavo Sierra.

Gustavo Sierra is a phenomenal journalist from Argentina who also worked for CNN and Univision. I used to read his articles and other books from him. This year, while I was in charge of the Hispanic Culture Review Journal that we have at Mason, he contacted us via e-mail to review this book for our journal. We did not have time to review it, but talking to him was such an enriching experience and had the chance to read the book.
