Brett Cowell works as a Project Associate at the Police Foundation, a national non-profit research organization established in 1970 to advance policing through innovation and science. His areas of interest include hot spots policing, community oriented policing, police use of force, officer safety, and evidence-based crime policy, and he is particularly passionate about working alongside practitioners to operationalize evidence-based practices. Brett’s recent work includes research on police use of force, police foot patrol, and body-worn camera recording procedures, and he has also been involved with the development and management of the Police Foundation’s LEO Near Miss reporting system. Prior to working at the Police Foundation, Brett received an M.A. in Criminology, Law and Society from Mason and a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance, with a minor in Leadership Studies, from Virginia Tech.
