COMM 590: Seminar in Communication

COMM 590-001: Applied Scientific Communication -- A Class Where You Partner with A Scientist to Communicate Research
(Fall 2017)

04:30 PM to 07:10 PM M

Section Information for Fall 2017

In this class, you team with a specific scientist and build an outreach product that shares that scientist’s research with a specific set of stakeholders.  For example, you might partner with an astronomer, a marine scientist, a hydrologist, or an environmental engineer.  Your “partner-with-a-scientist” project begins early in the semester, after the class has read about evidence-based guidance for science communication, guidance from National Academy of Science reports.  Scientists may be invited to partner by the student or the instructor will provide a set of scientists eager to partner with a class member. Graduate students in the natural sciences or engineering may share their own research, supported by communication professionals the instructor recruits. Scientists in George Mason University’s Department of Environmental Science and Public Policy and other organizations in Virginia and the Washington, DC, area will be invited to work with the class.  Students will end the semester with a tested outreach product they and their scientist partner can share.

For more information about this class, email Professor Katherine Rowan.  Rowan, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, enjoys researching science and risk communication and directs the science communication graduate certificate program.
