Section Information for Fall 2018

Even reading this syllabus on a laptop assembled with parts manufactured in different corners of the world, while connected to the Internet, we are living in the age of globalization. But what does “globalization” actually mean? When did globalization begin? What are the differences between globalization in the past and now? How does globalization intersect with other related concepts, like development and modernity? While drawing on theories of globalization, this course will focus on ethnographic literature and films on voyages, trades, food, resources, epidemics, communication, transportation, tourism, music, art, and more. In doing so, it aims to provide students the opportunity to analyze critically the concepts of globalization, development, and modernity, as well as their cultural manifestations.
