Image Theory, Image Life

Prof. Christopher Pizzino

This course will survey a range of theoretical approaches to the study of literature by engaging with a cluster of key questions: What is an image? What is the relationship between an image of something and the thing itself? What is the relationship between verbal and visual images? How do images have power, and what can this power do? And why do images often seem alive, as if they are entities with their own fate and their own will?

These questions will prompt us to spend some time with visual media alongside plenty of fiction, poetry and drama. And we will spend at least a little time with media that mix verbal and visual elements.

Students can expect to do a lot of writing during the term, and to have plenty of opportunities to develop mastery of a range of theoretical concepts and conversations.
