This course explores the concept of tragedy through close readings of literary works both ancient and modern. These readings are informed by philosophical engagements with tragedy, the tragic, character, absurdity and fate. Readings will include representative works by: Aeschylus, Sophocles, Plato, Aristotle, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Camus, Kafka, Fanon and Richard Wright.
