The Mathy Junior Faculty Awards in the Arts and Humanities

The Mathy Junior Faculty Awards in the Arts and Humanities are given jointly by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. These awards are designed to help promising junior faculty to become published scholars or active artists in their early years at George Mason University. The awards will provide for a release from teaching to the junior faculty member for fall or spring semester.

Eligibility

This program is open to assistant professors in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Visual and Performing Arts in their first to fourth year at George Mason University as of the Fall of 2017. The proposed research or artistic activity must be in the arts or humanities.

Application Process

Applicants should submit the following:

  • A proposal narrative (no more than six pages, page numbered) which includes:
    • A project title
    • A description of the proposed research or creative project written for an academic but non-specialist audience
    • The place and value of the proposed research or creative project with respect to the field
    • The qualifications of the applicant to carry out the research or creative project
    • References
  • A curriculum vitae
  • 3 letters of support, at least one from a George Mason University faculty member
  • Representative examples of recently published scholarship or creative work
  • Any supplemental materials the applicant believes will strengthen the proposal
    (for example, draft chapters of the planned monograph, preliminary sketches)

Application Receipt Deadline

Proposals for Mathy Junior Faculty Awards for 2017-2018 are due by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2017. Late proposals will not be considered.

Application Submission:

Applications may either be:

  • Submitted by email to the College at chss@gmu.edu in one PDF document.  Please note that books or visual materials that cannot be scanned into PDF may be labeled and submitted separately to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean’s Office;
  • Mailed to the Mathy Junior Faculty Awards Program, College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean’s Office, MS 3A3; or
  • Delivered to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean’s Office, D201 Mason Hall. 

Final Report

Recipients of the Mathy Award are required to submit a brief report that highlights the major accomplishments of the research leave. It should be in a form suitable for posting on the college website and sent as an attachment to mschwiet@gmu.edu.

Other information

Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received a Mathy Award. Faculty accepting this award must remain a full-time employee of the University for at least one academic year after the conclusion of the leave.
