Kyle brought to Mason a strong academic work ethic, which earned him a spot on the Dean's List and a Freshman Academic Achievement Scholarship in his first year. But he also brought a unique enthusiasm for service. In high school, he participated in Relay for Life, the National Honor Society, the Key Club, and in Buttons for Autism and Buttons for Japan, which raised funds for autism awareness and tsunami relief, respectively.

His giving nature is evident in his classwork, as well. His English composition instructor noted that his classmates approached her to praise Kyle not only for the quality of his writing, but for "the quality and thoroughness of his feedback to them" in group assignments.
