The master's degree program in anthropology prepares students for advanced work in anthropology through courses focusing on the study of culture. Students learn how to use participant-observation fieldwork methods, as well as comparative and holistic knowledge and research methods. Course work progresses from core courses, to more advanced courses, and culminates in a thesis.

Students must successfully complete 36 credits distributed as follows:      <ul> <li>Six required core courses (16 credits): ANTH 535, 536, 635, 650, 750, 797 (1 credit)</li> <li>14 credits of elective courses chosen from advanced courses in anthropology. Up to 6 credits may be from other programs, subject to the approval of the director.</li> <li>6 <script src="../../javascripts/tiny_mce/themes/advanced/langs/en.js" type="text/javascript"></script> credits of proposal (ANTH 798) and thesis (ANTH 799)</li> </ul> Students have the option of completing an internship (ANTH 690). An internship can serve as a primary field research site for the thesis, if appropriate. Courses in archaeology and biological anthropology may not be used to meet any requirements for the MA in anthropology.
