Clinical Psychology: developing and evaluating mental health promotion programs for college students and older adults; social support; substance abuse prevention; and mental health policy
Professor Short is a licensed clinical psychologist and conducts research on the prevention of psychological disorders and the promotion of mental health for adolescents, college students, and older adults. He has written a book entitled Psychological Fitness that describes cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and interpersonal exercises to improve mental health and decrease psychological symptoms.
He has taught more than 165 course sections to more than 3,000 students during the past 26 years at GMU. He has chaired 22 completed dissertations by his doctoral student advisees. His courses focus on understanding, assessing, treating, and preventing psychological disorders. He formerly served as the Director of the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program and prior to that was the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies in Psychology.
He is currently maintaining a list of doctoral externships in Clinical Psychology for the Washington, DC area.
Evaluation of a Psychological Fitness Intervention for College Students and Older Adults. Aim: Conduct and evaluate a 3-hour experimental intervention that teaches cognitive, behavioral, interpersonal, and emotion-focused exercises to adults in college or a retirement community.
Daily Experience Sampling of College Students' Health Behaviors, Self-Perceptions, Mood, and Life Satisfaction. Aim: Understand daily patterns of health behaviors and psychological well-being over 5 weeks.
Predictors of Help-seeking by College Students. Aim: Understand facilitators and barriers to help-seeking.
Meta-analysis of Brief Positive Psychological Interventions as a Supplement to Psychotherapy. Aim: Understand the relative value of positive interventions for those treated for psychological disorders.
