Garett Jones is Associate Professor of Economics and BB&T Professor for the Study of Capitalism at the Mercatus Center, George Mason University.
His research interests include macroeconomics, monetary economics, and the microfoundations of economic growth. His work has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Monetary Economics, the Journal of Economic Growth, and Critical Review. He has served as an associate editor of the New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, and wrote the preface to the Dictionary's 3rd edition.
His first book, published in 2015 by Stanford University Press, is entitled Hive Mind: How Your Nation's IQ Matters So Much More Than Your Own, and was reviewed in the Wall Street Journal. His second book, also with Stanford, published in 2020, is entitled 10% Less Democracy: Why You Should Trust Elites a Little More and the Masses a Little Less, and was reviewed in The Economist. His third book with Stanford, The Culture Transplant: How Migrants Make the Economies They Move to a Lot Like the Ones They Left, was reviewed in the Wall Street Journal.
In addition to his academic work, Garett has also served as Economic Policy Adviser to Senator Orrin Hatch and as a staff economist to the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress.
Prior to earning his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, San Diego, Garett earned a BA in history from Brigham Young University, a Master of Public Administration degree from Cornell and an MA in political science from UC Berkeley.
