Ahmet S. Yayla, Ph.D. currently works as the Deputy Director of the International Center for the Study of Violent Extremism (ICSVE). He formerly served as Professor and the Chair of the Sociology Department at Harran University in Turkey. Dr. Yayla earned both his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Criminal Justice and Information Science from the University of North Texas. Dr. Yayla served as the Chief of Counterterrorism and Operations Division for the Turkish National Police.

Dr. Yayla’s research mainly focuses on terrorism, radicalization and countering violence extremism (CVE). He has authored and co-authored several articles and books on the subject of terrorism and violence including First Responders’ Guide to Professionally Interacting with Muslim Communities: Law Enforcement, Emergency and Fire Fighters, Understanding and Responding to Terrorism: A Complete Model to Deal with Terrorism and Understanding and Responding to Terrorism.   

Dr. Yayla over the years has interviewed cadres representing over twenty terrorist organizations. The ISIS defectors interviews of late, are unique in the world as he was one of the first researchers who managed to reach ISIS defectors and persuade them to talk about their stories openly. Most of those were also video recorded for future documentaries.

Current Research

“The ISIS Defectors Interview Project.” The main objective of this project is to better understand ISIS terrorist organization by learning from insiders about how ISIS recruits, trains and indoctrinates its members, how it operates, functions, plans its activities, how we can more professionally and profoundly deal with this terrorist organization in the short and long run and how we can better predict its future attacks and actions.
