Degree Celebration Instructions for Graduate Students

These instructions are for master's and doctoral degree students participating in the college's degree celebration ceremonies in May.

Master's Degree Candidates

  • Arrive by 6:15pm (for the May 18 humanities and interdisciplinary degree ceremony) or 9:15am (for the May 19 social sciences degree ceremony) in Lot A on the east side of the EagleBank Arena.

  • Be dressed in your cap and gown. 

  • Find the sign for your degree program and line up with the faculty marshal.

  • Fill out a reader card with your name. You will hand this card to a reader during the ceremony.

  • Turn your cell phone off before entering the EagleBank Arena.

  • Process into the EagleBank Arena led by your faculty marshal and cued by the college staff.

  • During the ceremony, a college staff member will cue you when to go up on stage to be recognized. Your name will be announced as you walk across the stage and greet the dean and your department chair or program director.

  • Smile for the photographer!

  • Return to your seat as cued by the college staff.

  • At the end of the ceremony, recess out when cued by a college staff member.

  • After the recessional, meet your family, friends, and faculty at a reception for your degree program. The reception locations will be listed in the printed program.

Doctoral Degree Candidates

  • Arrive by 6:15pm (for the May 18 humanities and interdisciplinary degree ceremony) or 9:15am (for the May 19 social sciences degree ceremony) and check in inside the east entrance of EagleBank Arena. You will line up with the college's faculty in the Hospitality Room of the arena.

  • When you arrive, be dressed in your cap and gown.

  • Fill out a reader card with your name. You will hand this card to a reader during the ceremony.

  • Turn your cell phone off before entering the EagleBank Arena.

  • During the ceremony, a college staff member will cue you when to go up on stage to be recognized. Your name will be announced as you walk across the stage and greet the dean and your department chair or program director. All doctoral candidates will be officially hooded at the George Mason University Commencement ceremony that takes place on May 20, 2017. You will be hooded by your advisor, if the advisor is available.

  • Smile for the photographer!

  • Return to your seat as cued by the college staff.

  • At the end of the ceremony, recess out when cued by a college staff member.

  • After the recessional, meet your family, friends, and faculty at a reception for your degree program. The reception locations will be listed in the printed program.
