In HIST 390, you will to learn to do history using digital tools. The content focus for the course will be American Immigration history, but the skills you learn over the semester will be useful to you throughout your university career and in your professional life. In our Active Learning Environment, you will work with your classmates to locate and analyze digitized historical primary sources; research and synthesize secondary sources to offer context for your primary source work; publish your work online using two different content management systems; gather and refine data from many sources to produce effective visualizations; create digital maps that offer a spatial context for your primary sources; analyze and interpret large corpora of texts; and, combine all of these skills together to ask and answer an historical inquiry question.

Teaches the fundamentals of information technology within the context of a history course. Students learn fundamentals and skills as well as how our society became so enamored of and dependent on these knowledge and information tools. Understanding a new technology requires understanding how new technologies transform the societies that embrace them. Emphasizes the use of free and open-source software whenever possible. Limited to three attempts.
