Foreign Language

Students earning a BA degree in CHSS or COS must demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency in one foreign language.

George Mason offers Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Russian and Spanish.  Students can demonstrate proficiency:

  1. by completing an approved intermediate level foreign language sequence
  2. by successfully completing a course that requires intermediate-level
proficiency and is taught in the foreign language (see courses listed below)
  3. by achieving a satisfactory score on an approved proficiency test
  4. for students whose native language is not English, by presenting for admission to George Mason University an approved score on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and on the TOEFL essay.

Beginning Fall 2007, the approved intermediate-level foreign language sequence at George Mason concludes with 210. The previously approved sequence, concluding with either 202 or 209, is also approved to meet this requirement.
