- The ceremony will take place Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Concert Hall on the Fairfax campus.
- The Center for the Arts doors will open at 6 p.m. for general seating for family and friends.
- Tickets are NOT required for convocation.

- All master’s students must be outside on the plaza between Mason Hall and the Concert Hall at 6:20 p.m.
- All doctoral students must be in the Black Box Theater in the Performing Arts building at 6:20 p.m.
Master’s Students
- On Thursday May 15, all graduating master’s students must be outside on the plaza between Mason Hall and the Concert Hall at 6:20 p.m.
- Be dressed in your cap and gown.
- On the plaza, find your degree program sign and line up with the faculty marshal.
- You will process into the Center for the Arts led by your faculty marshal.
- Turn your cell phone to vibrate before entering the Center for the Arts.
- You will be individually recognized and your name will be announced as you walk across the stage.
- There will be a recessional following the ceremony and you are invited to attend your academic program’s reception.
Doctoral Students
- On Thursday May 15, all graduating doctoral students and their advisors must be in the Black Box Theater in the Performing Arts building at 6:20 p.m.
- Be dressed in your cap and gown.
- Plan to stay in the Black Box Theater until the ceremony procession begins.
- You will process into the Center for the Arts led by faculty marshals.
- Make sure your cell phone is set to vibrate before entering the Center for the Arts.
- During the ceremony, you will be hooded by your advisor.
- There will be a recessional following the ceremony and you are invited to attend your academic program’s reception.
- Caps and gowns are required for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences convocation ceremony as well as for the university commencement on May 17, 2008. Degree candidates may purchase caps and gowns at the University Bookstore.
- You will not be able to purchase a cap and gown by visiting the university bookstore web site, you must go in person and fill out a form. Please do this as soon as possible to avoid rush shipping charges.
- Visit events.gmu.edu for more information on university commencement, to be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008.
