Sociology PhD Student Joins Journal Editorial Board

Jason Smith, a PhD student in Mason's Sociology Program, has just joined Social Problems' editorial board as its student member. Social Problems is the official publication of The Society for the Study of Social Problems and one of the most widely respected and read professional journals in the social sciences (ranked 15th out of 142 sociology journals with an Impact Factor of 1.729). Here is further information from Social Problems' announcement:

[Jason's] research interests broadly deal with the intersection of race and media, as well as issues related to inclusion and deliberative democracy. Jason’s ongoing dissertation project deals with diversity issues within policy debates at the Federal Communications Commission and its impact on creating an inclusive media environment for minorities and women. Other activities have included teaching courses in “Social Inequality” and “Intro to Sociology” at GMU and within the N.VA community college system. His work has been published in several journals and he is co-editor of an edited volume called "Race and Contention in Twenty-first Century U.S. Media."
