Each year, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences presents the Mary Roper Award to a classified staff member, based on the recommendations and nominations of co-workers. The award honors those who have made outstanding contributions to the workplace and consistently demonstrate excellent performance. This year, Susan Ridley’s colleagues in the Department of Psychology showed her how much her work is appreciated, nominating her for the 11th annual Mary Roper Award.
Ridley has been the office manager in the Department of Psychology since January 2007. She deals with both simple and complex budgetary and enrollment issues, handles much of the office’s operations management and fills in other roles whenever needed. She won the Staff Senate Spring 2009 Outstanding Supervisor Award, and was honored again in Fall 2009 with the CHSS Outstanding Contributions in Administrative Support Award.
“I am honored to receive the Mary Roper award,” Ridley said. “I have been regaled many times with stories of Roper’s excellence and dedication to the university. I am lucky to have such an excellent staff and supportive faculty to work alongside, and I look forward to many more years of service at George Mason University.”
The award ceremony takes place on Dec. 6, 2011, 10 a.m., in the Center for the Arts, Third Tier.
The college will also honor several other classified staff members, but these specialized awards will come as a complete surprise to the winners.
The Mary Roper award honors a College of Humanities and Social Sciences classified staff member who has shown outstanding service in support of the core goals of the college – improving the quality of the liberal arts experience for all students, increasing the capacity for noteworthy and innovative scholarship and creating and strengthening external relationships.
The award is named after Mary Roper, administrative assistant to the chief of staff in George Mason University’s President’s Office. Roper spent 14 years in the College of Arts and Sciences (before it split into the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Science).
Annie Lonetti, office manager for the Department of Criminology, Law and Society, won the award last year.
