This week, students from all over the country are converging on George Mason University’s campuses.
As they prepare to take the next step in their academic careers, these students have been welcomed to campus with Welcome Week – an annual week-long event which takes place prior to the start of classes and features more than 75 activities.
When fall semester classes began on Aug. 31, nearly 3,000 students flooded into programs housed in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Nearly 700 freshman, 900 transfers and 600 graduate students have selected majors within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
“It's a great pleasure to see the continued renewal of interest in the social sciences and humanities, evidenced by so many students electing to major in the college,” said Dean Jack Censer. “I hope each and every one of them will have a wonderful and enriching experience.”
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is a cornerstone of learning and research at George Mason University. Its mission is to provide high quality education for graduate and undergraduate students, to conduct relevant research across the humanities and social sciences, and to offer intellectual leadership to the community.
The college is composed of 11 departments, 11 major interdisciplinary programs, one college, and 10 research centers and has a distinguished faculty of over 400. Over the past years, the faculty have received numerous awards and prizes including the Nobel Prize, the Stockholm Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the MacArthur fellowship, and the Guggenheim Fellowship, among others. It is also home to three university-wide programs for undergraduate students -- the Honors Program in General Education, Technology across the Curriculum, and the University Writing Center.
