University General Education and College Requirements

University General Education Requirements
- Written communication (6 credits): Fulfilled by ENGL 100 or 101 and ENGL 302
- Oral communication (3 credits): Fulfilled by COMM 100 or 101
- Quantitative reasoning (3 credits)
- Information technology (3 credits)
- Literature (3 credits)
- Fine arts (3 credits)
- Natural science (7 credits): CHSS and COS require 8 credits of a lab science sequence
- Western civilization (3 credits): Fulfilled by HIST 100 or 125 (other options for transfer students)
- Social and behavioral science (3 credits)
- Global understanding (3 credits)
- Synthesis (3 credits)
Students must fulfill each of these university general education requirements with a separate course. No course may be used to fulfill more than one university requirement.
Under some circumstances, students may use a single course to fulfill a university general education requirement and a college-level requirement or a requirement for the major. See your academic advisor for more information.
College Requirements for the BA
- Literature (3 credits in addition to the university requirement): Fulfilled by any course in literature at the 200 level in English, selected courses in foreign languages at the 300 level, or PHIL 253
- Philosophy or religious studies (3 credits): Fulfilled by any course in PHIL or RELI
- Social science
- Math and science majors (3 credits in addition to the university general education requirement)
- Other majors (6 credits in addition to the university general education requirement; no more than 6 credits of the 9 credits of social science may be in a single discipline).
- Proficiency in a foreign language through the intermediate level (0-12 credits)
- Non-western culture (3 credits in addition to the global understanding requirement)
Under some circumstances, students may use a single course to fulfill a more than one college-level requirement. It is also possible under some circumstances to use a single course to fulfill a university general education requirement and a college-level requirement or a requirement for the major. Transfer students who have completed an AA or AS from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) have fulfilled all lower level university general education requirements. They will need to complete English 302 and a synthesis course. Transfer students pursuing a BA degree in CHSS or COS also need to meet the foreign language requirement.
